With the many changes in the Arts Service and an Arts Grants round on the horizon the Arts Team have been extremely busy putting together the Across the Street, Around the World festival which celebrates cultural heritage and community in Kensington and Chelsea. This issue sees the introduction of the London Borough Film Fund to Kensington and Chelsea, an update on the Portobello Road Arts Project, Pumpkin Carving workshops and much more. Across the Street, Around the World
September to December 2009 The Across the Street, Around the World brochure is available now! With over 60 events happening at 30 venues in the borough including dance, film, live music, visual art, walking tours, theatre, exhibitions, workshops and debate this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better then ever. Events are organised by the Arts Service and by Artists and organisations across Kensington and Chelsea. They include a ‘Taste the World’ food strand focusing on North Africa and China, Secret London and True/False walking tours across the borough, a new music collaboration ‘From Palestine to Portugal’, Samba, steel pan and Islamic visual arts workshops, a debate on arts and cultural diversity and a Halloween Fair after dark in Holland Park. Many thanks go to those organisations and individuals that let us know about their events for free inclusion in the brochure. Arts Grants Scheme
A reminder that the next deadline for applications to the Arts Grants Scheme is Friday, 18 September 2009. The scheme is for arts activities or projects taking place in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Projects must also meet at least two of the current strategic objectives and comply with the funding criteria. If you have a project in mind, detailed information about the scheme, including the strategic objectives, criteria and the application form can be found at www.rbkc.gov.uk/artservice We also advise that you speak with an Arts Service officer prior to making an application. Coming Soon... Streetlight 09
Thursday 15 October to Sunday 15 November Shop-fronts and windows across North Kensington will be lit up with glowing artworks and projections celebrating cultural heritage and community during October and November. The artworks will form an iridescent trail along Portobello Road, under the Westway Flyover and up to Golborne Road. Keep an eye on the Arts Service website and you will be able to download a map to walk the streetlight trail yourself Join us on Thursday 15 October for the Artist-led walk: Participating artists: Sigune Hamann, Lisa Nash, Julie Goldsmith, Rebecca Foster, Joanne Salter, Paul Vivian, Paul Allcock and Rob Rainbow 7pm. Pumpkin Carving at Holland Park
Join us from Tuesday 27th October in Holland Park where you can enjoy a cup of hot cider, learn about the stories of 'All Hallows Eve' and carve your own Jack O Lantern. Your lantern will form part of our Holland Park Halloween Fair, when the ancient woodland of Holland Park will be lit by candles inside your pumpkins, as the park comes alive with the mad, macabre and mysterious whirlwind of Victorian Halloween courtesy of Punchdrunk Theatre. The carving sessions are open to all and will take place from 10am-4pm from Monday 26th - Thursday 29th October in the Car Park by the Abbotsbury Road Entrance of Holland Park. Portobello Road Arts Project: Liane Lang
Due to great response, the work by artist Liane Lang, which is on display on the Portobello Road North Wall, will hopefully be extending its stay until the end of the year. Her work 'La Muralla' consists of a 60 metre long vinyl print displaying fifty consecutive images akin to film stills. The images display fleeting scenes of the street and wall that surrounds the Dominican Convent, now the Spanish School taken from sunrise to sunset on Valentine’s Day 2009. New Studio Bursary Artist Announced
London-based sculptor, Julian Wild, has been awarded the second of RBKC’s Artist Studio Bursaries and will take up residence from September. The bursary scheme was developed by RBKC in partnership with the Chelsea Arts Club Trust, to offer a mid-career sculptor access to a studio space for three years. The aim of the scheme is to enable a talented artist to develop their work and professional practice in a supportive environment, whilst also contributing to the artistic community within the Borough. Julian will be developing new work as well as engaging with the local community throughout his three year tenure. Watch this space for further info! |

And More Change...
The end of September will see our fantastic administrator, Tamara Morriss, leaving the Arts Service. She will be taking up an exciting role with the Council's 2012 team. Tamara has been with the Arts Service for a year and will be greatly missed and we wish her the best of luck in her new job. |

The EAC Over 60s Art Awards are back again with their 13th annual competition for amateur artists over the age of 60. Adult Social Care: Grants Funding for Voluntary Organisations 2010/11
Adult Social Care is currently seeking applications from the voluntary and community organisations for grant funding from April 2010 until March 2011 for Adult Social Care Adult Social Care will be funding areas which can demonstrate one or more of the following priority areas: 1. Improved quality of life 2. Better health and well-being 3. choice and control 4. making a positive contribution 5. Dignity and respect 6. freedom from discrimination and harassment 7. Economic well-being All voluntary and community organisations that provide relevant services for people who live, work or visit the Royal Borough are eligible to apply for a grant. The closing date to submit application forms is 23 September 2009 at 12 noon. Late applications will not be considered.

Artist Needed for Environmental Leaflet
The Council’s Environmental Quality and Public Health Team will be introducing a leaflet on indoor air quality, including ways to improve it. The team would like to use a local artist’s work on the front cover of this leaflet and is offering £250 to the chosen winner. The main objective is for the image to be eye catching, unique and to generate interest in a topic that can be challenging to represent visually. The image might be photographic, a cartoon, an abstract design, an arrangement of colours, an arresting style of lettering, a drawing/painting; but it must be easily transferred to photo-ready artwork.

Arts Council: Arts in Empty Spaces
Art in empty spaces, the Arts Council’s £500,000 initiative to help artists and arts organisations turn vacant high street shops into vibrant artistic places, is now open for applications. Individuals and organisations are invited to apply for grants to support artistic activity that transforms empty retail units into creative spaces – anything from an art gallery to recording studios or family arts workshops – which the whole community can enjoy.

LDA Launches Second Round of Funding
The London Development Agency has announced the launch of the second round of funding for its 2007-10 Community Grants Programme. Small voluntary and community organisations can apply for grants of up to £12,000 to support quality outreach provision, providing an essential stepping stone for unemployed and economically inactive participants to find employment or progress to further learning.

The Waiting Room
Friday 18 September to Thursday 1 October The Hortensia Gallery, Kensington and Chelsea College, Hortensia Road, SW10 0QS The Waiting Room is the culmination of a project by Fitztrovia Noir and visual artist Linda Duffy working with the local residents of Hortensia Road to produce a time wheel continuum 'mapping' the history of Hortensia Road. London Design Festival at the V&A
